Tom was a lazy boy. He hated going to school, studying and doing homework. One day, when Gluebeard, the famous captain, came to town in search of young sailors, Tom made sure he was the first in line.
On Gluebeard’s ship, every minute of every day was spent looking for treasure and if anyone was found reading or studying, they would be locked in a small room full of mice. And so Tom began his life as a treasure-hunting sailor, but it wasn’t easy. They hardly had enough money to buy food and clothes.
One day, someone on the ship stole the only food Tom had left. Two days later, Tom was so hungry that he secretly went to the room full of mice to find one and eat it. But when he entered, he couldn’t find a single mouse. He did find a secret room, one that was full of... books! Suddenly he heard some voices and he hid away to listen...
Tom was very angry. He heard Gluebeard laugh at how stupid the crew (全体船员) were, how easy it was to fool them, and how foolish and poor they would always be after leaving their studies behind.
From that day on, Tom waited every night until everyone was asleep. Then he visited the room full of books, where he spent his time studying all kinds of books. Soon he found that learning about so many things gave him better ideas.
After a few years, he left Gluebeard’s ship, used the money he made to buy his own boat and found his own crew. Unlike Gluebeard, however, he only chose people who studied. And instead of fooling them, he encouraged them to search for treasure with him. With so many clever people, ________.

When we talk about Chinese handmade paper, you probably think of Xuan paper. However, there are different kinds in different places, and Lianshi paper from Fujian is one of them.
Going back 400 years, Lianshi paper is made by hand using bamboo. According to Fujian Daily, Lianshi paper weighs only 19 grams (克) every square meter, but it is strong. Thanks to this, Lianshi paper was listed as a provincial intangible cultural heritage (省级非物质文化遗产) in Fujian in 2008.
Deng Jinkun,54, has been learning to make Lianshi paper for 30 years. He said making Lianshi paper has 72 steps, including cutting bamboo, soaking (浸湿), making pulp (纸浆), and drying. What makes it stand out is its bleaching (漂白) technology. “In May each year, bamboo is cut off, and soaked in lime (石灰) twice. The bamboo is then heated at a high temperature. After that, it’s bleached on the mountain for four months,” Deng said. The natural bleaching process makes it white, he added.
Besides carrying on traditional art, Deng also brought in new ideas at the same time. Traditionally the pulp is collected using a wooden shelf held by two people. “Our Lianshi paper needs only one person as we use strings to hang one side,” Deng said.
When they heat the paper, the baking wall is also special. According to Deng, other places use lime to make the wall. “After a trip to the University of Science and Technology of China in 2018, I decided to use a special kind of clay to make the wall so that it lasts longer,” he said. After it is built, the baking wall can be used to make paper for 40 years.

The Maori arrived in New Zealand from Polynesian (波利尼西亚) islands about a thousand years ago. They were the first people to live in New Zealand.
In the late 18th century, Europeans came to live in New Zealand. At that time, the population of the Maori was maybe 250,000 in New Zealand. Over the next one hundred years, wars and disease killed many Maori people. By the end of the 19th century, there were only about 40,000 Maori people left. During this time, the Maori also lost much of their land to the Europeans. Many of them were afraid that they might lose their traditions and language too, but this did not happen.
Today the Maori population is increasing. There are about 500,000 Maori people in New Zealand. Most live like other New Zealanders, but they are keeping the Maori language and traditions alive. There are now Maori radio and television stations. Many schools teach in the Maori language. Nearly one half of Maori language speakers are 25 years old or younger.
Maori culture is also alive and well. At the center of Maori culture is the “marae”. This is a special place for ceremonies and meetings. Today the number of marae in New Zealand is increasing. Many of the new marae are in the cities. Now people in the cities can meet and learn about their Maori traditions.
Today most New Zealand cities have Maori festivals each year. Among festival activities are competitions in speaking, dancing and singing. Children practice for months. Then all the Maori in the area arrive to watch the competitions and see who wins.
