“I hate them! I really hate them!” shouted Tom angrily.

Tara and Ziggy looked at their friend. He was really furious!

“Arjun is OK now,” said Tara, trying to calm Tom down.

Ziggy looked at the ground. He moved his head from side to side. The three friends were in the park after school talking about their friend Arjun. Today two bullies (霸凌者) pushed Arjun against a locker and hurt him. Now he has five stitches (针) in his forehead (额头).

Heston High School was a nice, peaceful place until Brian and Mark arrived a few months ago. They were bullies and that morning their victim (受害者) was Arjun, maybe because he was smaller and younger than everyone else in the class.

“Brian and Mark must pay!” repeated Tom. He was walking around in circles and hitting the palm of his left hand with his right fist.

“Can’t you see? You’re behaving like the bullies,” Tara said sadly.

Ziggy looked at Tara. He knew Tom very well. Tom wasn’t usually violent. He usually solved problems in a civilized way. Tara hated violence and she didn’t like Tom being so angry. Tom hated violence, too.

“No, I’m not. I’m not like Brian and Mark,” replied Tom. “And I’m going to stop them,” he said.

“We have to tell someone about this,” said Tara. “Arjun was hurt.”

People hate mosquitoes (蚊子) because of their blood-sucking tendencies (吸血倾向). Scientists, too, are troubled by mosquitoes and have been finding ways to keep them away.

A team of scientists in the US looked into different kinds of soap. They invited volunteers to test how four different soap flavors (香味) attract mosquitoes.

After some experiments, the scientists found several chemicals (化学物质) in the soap that can influence the mosquitoes’ “choice of food”. Two chemicals, one with the smell of coconut and another with the smell of flowers, can keep mosquitoes away.

The team also found that it’s not just the chemicals that influence mosquitoes, it’s the combination of chemicals and each person’s smell. For example, people who attract mosquitoes can be more attractive to them after using one type of soap. They can also repel (击退) mosquitoes by using another kind of soap.

How mosquitoes manage to find humans also made scientists interested. According to a new study, scientists built a “canteen” for hundreds of mosquitoes. In the 20-by-20-meter facility, there were six pads that had the smell of different humans.

They found that mosquitoes can track smells up to 60 meters. Also, mosquitoes are most attracted to a kind of chemical called carboxylic acid (羧酸), which is usually produced by bacteria (细菌) on human skin. The smell of one pad wasn’t attractive to mosquitoes, and scientists believed it was because he is a vegetarian (素食者).

By analyzing the chemicals that either attract or repel mosquitoes, scientists are able to improve mosquito repellent. With more studies, scientists believe changing a person’s diet could one day make them mosquito-proof. This is especially good for regions where mosquitoes carry diseases, such as malaria (疟疾).
