Michael and his wife had recently moved into a new apartment building in SanFrancisco when they met a neighbor who is an Indian priest (牧师).

The priest, Jeff Dunan, 77, told Michael about an organization he volunteers for, which provides food, clothing and essential supplies to poor people in northern Bangladesh. The man decided to donate to the GoFundMe campaign, and settled on$150. “I thought it was a good cause, and a neighborly thing to do,” he said.

Shortly after making his donation on the GoFundMe campaign that day in February 2022, though, Michael received information from his credit card company, warning him of a suspiciously (可疑地)large business. He opened the text message, which warned him of a $15,041 charge from GoFundMe. When he saw the five-figure number, he couldn’t believe it.

Soon, it all made sense. Michael’s credit card number started with four and one. Clearly, he said, he accidentally began typing his credit card information while his cursor(光标) was still in the donation box.

Michael called GoFundMe’s support line in a panic and explained the mistaken donation. To his relief, he was told he would be refunded for the mistake within three to seven business days.

Still, there was a major complication: The $15,000 donation — which more than doubled the total amount raised at the time — would remain on the GoFundMe page until the refund was processed.

“I was like, oh no, that’s a problem,” Michael recalled. Before he explained to Dunan, he started receiving Facebook messages from Shohag Chandra, the charity’s Bangladesh-based program manager, thanking him for his substantial donation.

“The man had sent me a video of himself from Bangladesh, surrounded by dozens of hungry people holding bags of food, thanking me BY NAME.” After Michael watched it, his heart sank. He felt terrible that he had to revoke (撤销) his donation, and he wanted to offer more. Once his original contribution was refunded, he donated $1,500.

PARIS-The Chinese women’s volleyball team won a quarterfinal spot of 2024 Paris Olympics with an easy 3-0 win over hosts France in their second Group A match here on Thursday.

The 25-18, 25-16, 25-19 victory ensured China’s team in the knockout stage with one group match remaining, joining Brazil, Poland, Italy, and Turkey, who have also secured the quarterfinal spots. With two wins in a row and five points, China’s team currently lead Group A, ahead of Serbia and the United States, who each have one win.

In Group B, Brazil and Poland both have secured two wins, while Japan and Kenya remain winless. Group C saw Italy and Turkey also achieve two victories, with the Netherlands taking a win. The situation indicates even if China lost their final group match, their wins and points will still be sufficient to surpass the third place teams in Groups B and C, according to the tournament’s qualification rules.

In the first set against France, China started strong with a 5-0 run, forcing an early timeout. Despite a brief rally (反弹) led by Lucille Gicquel’s powerful serves, China regained control with improved receiving. The second set followed a similar pattern, with China quickly establishing a lead that France couldn’t overcome. Although France managed to tie the score at12-12 in the third set and momentarily stopped China’s momentum (势头), the Chinese team regained dominance to close out the match.

“The French side is not a weak team. They have powerful serves and good block height, but they made too many mistakes, ” commented a China’s head coach.

“It will be really hard, like I mentioned, we are in a strong group, it would be really hard to beat another team, but we are here and we are playing against China for the first time, and we are going to play the US, so we are taking some experience for the next time, ” said Lucille Gicquel who got a team high 10 points for France.

【小题1】How many points has the Chinese women’s volleyball team earned after two group matches?
A.3 pointsB.4 pointsC.5 pointsD.6 points
【小题2】What can be inferred about the Chinese team’s qualification for the quarterfinals?
A.They must win the final group match to advance.
B.Their current performance guarantees a quarterfinal spot regardless of the final match result.
C.They need to surpass the third-place teams in all groups to qualify.
D.The result of the final group match will significantly affect their qualification.
【小题3】What can we infer from Lucille Gicquel’s comment?
A.France will avoid playing against strong teams in the future.
B.The French team lacks confidence in competing with top teams.
C.France believes they can defeat China in future matches.
D.Playing against China and the US is a valuable experience for France.
【小题4】What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To report on China’s victory over France and their qualification for the Paris Olympics quarterfinals.
B.To analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the Chinese and French volleyball teams.
C.To compare the performance of different teams in the volleyball tournament.
D.To discuss the importance of group stage match es in the Olympics.

If you’ve ever hung around scientists, you’ve most likely heard one of them say “the best explanation is the simplest one. But is it? From the behavior of ants to the occurrence of tornadoes, the natural world is often quite complex. Why should we assume the simplest explanation is closest to the truth?

This idea is known as Occam’s (or Ockham’s) razor. It’s also referred to as “rule of economy”. And it bears a family relationship to the “principle of least astonishment,” which holds that if an explanation is too surprising, it’s probably not right. The name comes from William of Ockham, a 14th-century scholastic philosopher. He created the principle that “entities (实体) should not be multiplied beyond necessity.” The philosophical claim is a form of ontological minimalism: we should not invoke entities unless we have evidence that they exist. In other words, don’t make stuff up.

In 1687, Isaac Newton expanded on the notion with his concept of a vera causa — a true cause, stating that we should admit only causes that were both true and sufficient to explain natural phenomena. He added that Nature did nothing in vain and Nature was pleased with simplicity. Although Newton was a great scientist, this claim seems odd. Who is to say what “pleases Nature”? Doesn’t this guidance assume we know what we are in fact trying to figure out?

Consider the world of Physics filled with explanations that are surprising, unexpected and hard to get your head around. Newton explained light as being made of particles, whereas other scientists explained it as a wave. Quantum mechanics, however, tells us light is both a wave and a particle. Newton’s account was simpler, but modern physics tells us the more complex model is closer to the truth.

When we turn to biology, things get even more complicated. Imagine two smokers, both of whom went through a pack a day for 30 years. One gets cancer; the other doesn’t. The simplest explanation? For decades the tobacco industry’s answer was that smoking doesn’t cause cancer. Simple but false. In fact, disease is complex, and we don’t yet understand all the factors involved in cancer.

Occam’s razor is not a fact or even a theory. It’s a metaphysical (形而上学的) principle: an idea held independently of empirical (实证的) evidence. In human affairs, things are more often than not complex. Human motivations are typically multiple. People can be good and bad at the same time, selfish and selfless, depending on circumstances. The shelves of ethicists are filled with books thinking why good people do bad things, and their answers are rarely short and sweet.

Our explanations should match the world as best as we can make them. Science is about allowing things to unfold naturally, and sometimes this means accepting that the truth is not simple, even if it would make our lives easier if it were.

【小题1】Occam’s razor indicates that ________.
A.explanations should be consistent with purposes
B.sufficient causes can explain natural phenomena
C.reasonable explanations are rarely surprising
D.simpler explanations should be preferred
【小题2】Why is Newton’s view on simplicity problematic?
A.It assumes unknown truths.B.It lacks experimental support.
C.It conflicts quantum physics.D.It overlooks biological complexity.
【小题3】What is against tobacco industry’s “simple” cancer claim?
A.Random chance occurrence.B.Disease’s natural complexity.
C.Long-term health statistics.D.Smokers’ behavioral differences.
【小题4】It’s implied in the passage that we need to ________.
A.follow the laws of nature.B.balance accuracy and simplicity.
C.interpret the world as it is.D.highlight the existence of entities.
