In the calm and traditional world of classical music, composer Tan Dun is something of a rock star. Born in 1957 in a village near Changsha, Tan Dun worked as a rice planter in his early years. While music was strongly discouraged within the rice-planting communities, Tan learnt to play traditional Chinese stringed instruments with his friends and eventually joined a local band.

But the transition from hobby to career came about through a tragic (不幸的) tum of events. After several members of a Peking Opera troupe (剧团) drowned in a boat accident, Tan was hired to work as an arranger and violinist. The time at the troupe proved successful and Tan got the attention of Central Conservatory of Music (CCOM) where he was accepted as a student in 1977. Years later, he further studied at New York’s Columbia University.

Under the teaching of famous composers around the word, Tan launched his international career through a series of modern operas. With the knowledge of eastern and western classical music, he composed Marco Polo, an abstract retelling of the 13th-century Venetian explorer’s life through eastern and western instruments.

Tan has composed symphonies and operas that have been performed in some of the world’s most famous theaters. He has also contributed the scores (配乐) to six films, including 2000’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, as well as several experimental multimedia projects. For people who are deaf or hard of hearing, it can be difficult to pick out important sounds, such as knocks at the door or fire alarms. Now researchers at the University of Washington have developed a smartwatch app called SoundWatch, which identifies sounds and reminds users of them with a vibration and a visual readout.

The project was led by Dhruv Jain, inspired by his own experience being hard of hearing. SoundWatch uses the smartwatch’s microphone to listen out for particular sounds, sends the data to a user’s connected phone for processing, then back to the watch to display in text what the sound is, and how loud it is. That’s accompanied by a vibration to tell the wearer that something has been detected.

“This technology provides people with a way to experience sounds that require an action—such as getting food from the microwave when it beeps, which can improve people’s experiences and help them feel more connected to the world,” says Jain. “But it’s not perfect of course. The app sometimes gets it wrong, or takes too long to tell a user. However, these issues are being worked on.”

Disability is highly personal, and Jain hopes his team can find ways for people to personalize this app for their own specific needs. For example, people can be told about the sounds they care about- a husband’s or wife’s voice versus general speech, the back door opening versus the front door opening, and more.

【小题1】What does “them” in paragraph 1 refer to?

Western fashion brands (时尚品牌) have a design problem with Chinese characters, or hanzi. They still disappoint Chinese customers with the way they use Chinese writing on their products.

The most common mistakes suggest there is not enough research and cultural understanding. For example, a Burberry scarf was embroidered (刺绣) with the Chinese character fu upright instead of upside down, as it’s traditionally shown in China. Even the fonts (字体) are a problem. In May, Dior, one of the world’s leading fashion brands, started a special service for customers to have their Chinese names embroidered on Book Tote handbags. When some Chinese stars carrying the customized handbags were shown on social media, the Chinese fashion community expressed their disappointment. Many believed the font on Dior’s handbags showed little artistic taste and looked cheap.

It’s not all disappointment, though. Experimentation and careful research have brought positive results for brands coming close to hanzi. Consider the logo (标志) created for Prada Rong Zhai, an old building repaired and owned by the Prada Group in Shanghai. The Rong Zhai type was created by 2 x4 (a New York-based design studio) by using the Roman letters in the original Prada logo to create the Chinese characters. The result is a unique logo that suggests both lettered strictness and a classic Prada style. The type’s West-meet-East mix won broad admiration among Chinese customers online.

One way to keep up to date is to team up with creatives and artists of the country to create designs that can be more acceptable to Chinese customers. Joining forces with local partners can also avoid misunderstandings that happen when a design team doesn't know Chinese culture very well.

Social media is a double-edged sword. It can be good or bad, depending on how people use it. Here are several ways to help one use it responsibly.

【小题1】

Social media can be a big waste of time if you spend most of your day looking through what other people post, commenting on and liking things, or looking at every message on your device. Instead, you should learn to practice some self-control and limit your usage every day. 【小题2】 Afterward, set an amount of time for your social media use, such as 10 minutes every time.

Think twice before posting something.

Materials posted on social media are often more lasting than you think. And even if your post is deleted, words and images you upload on these platforms can remain online and be difficult to remove. 【小题3】 Therefore, before posting something online, consider if it would negatively affect others. If it is, then don’t post it. 【小题4】 This can destroy your reputation or others’.

Learn to check the truth of things that you see.

Some of the things you see on social media might not necessarily be true, especially when it comes to news and information. You may immediately believe what you see and read. The danger of this behavior is that you might be spreading misinformation if you share what you have seen before checking the truth of the post. 【小题5】 Check from other sources whether what you have seen and read is true. Ask opinions from other people.
