These days, I have been gathering contributions for Class Notes from my classmates at the Brearley School. Seven contributions have come in. They are long or short, emotional or matter-of-fact, and now my job will be to cut and select, rephrase and quote, and count words from each contributor- our entire collection will have to add up to no more than six hundred and fifty words.
The tough part is trying to give more or less equal space to each of these life accounts, since some of us tend to relate incidents in great detail while others are tight-lipped. If nine of us altogether, including me, contribute notes, then each note is allowed a little over seventy words. If another contribution comes in at the last minute, we all go down to about sixty-five. Do I cut out the trip to Costa Rica, or the visit to the nephew in New Jersey? The recent grandchild, broken leg, or Scrabble (拼字游戏) competition?
Why did I decide I would not mind being a class-notes agent? I suppose I pursue any piece of writing for two main reasons. First, I like the challenge of trying a new form. In this case, my task is to rearrange the writings of a range of personalities to create one fairly smooth whole. The second reason is always emotional. Here, one source of my emotion was the years-long experience of the school itself. I was also touched that my classmates suggested me for the job, their sensible reason being: “You’re a writer. “
As a 65-year-old lady, I feel tired sometimes, but I’ve never stopped valuing every moment in this job. For me, my classmates are still full of youthful energy, passion, or disgust or tearful hurt. I’m not sure I’m naturally gifted at turning all these colorful details into a brief and entertaining account. That’s how I do it — quote their own words as often as I can.

| C.By making comparisons. | D.By giving definitions. |

| C.She is hesitant about the role. | D.She is acknowledged by her classmates. |
| A.It’s stressful. | B.It’s worthwhile. | C.It’s straightforward. | D.It’s troublesome. |
Few would be content to go on a multiyear project to Mars with a diet of bland, prepackaged meals. As space organizations plan for longer exploration, they’re faced with the challenge of how to best feed people. Now, researchers have designed the perfect “space meal”: a tasty vegetarian salad. They choose fresh ingredients (原料) that meet male astronauts’ specialized needs for nutritious (有营养的) food and can be grown in space.
Astronauts in space burn more calories than humans on Earth and require extra micronutrients to stay healthy during long periods in space. Also, future long-term tasks will require growing food in an environmentally-friendly way within the spacecraft or settlements on other planets. While researchers have explored methods of growing food in space and what nutrients astronauts require to stay healthy, specific fresh meals have not been developed. So, Volker Hessel and coworkers wanted to make a space meal that meets those unique requirements of spaceflight and tastes good.
First, the researchers examined mixes of fresh ingredients. In this case, their model showed how well the mixes of different foods could satisfy a male astronaut’s daily nutritional needs while using the smallest amount of water for growing the foods. The team was also concerned about environmental protection, selecting ingredients that needed little fertilizer (肥料), time and area to grow and whether uneatable parts could be reused. They found that a vegetarian meal made up of soybeans’, peanuts, sweet potato and sunflower seeds had the best balance of lots of nutrients and low farming needs.
To make sure the chosen mix was tasty, the team made the space meal into a salad for four people to have a taste test here on Earth. One tester said he “wouldn’t mind eating this all week as an astronaut.”. Other people went back for second helpings. In the future, the researchers plan to see what their computer model dishes up as choices for female astronauts and add more variety to crops in their database.

As DeepSeek, the latest AI phenomenon, thunders into public awareness, social media platforms are being transformed into creative classrooms where just about everything imaginable is taught by using the software — from designing wedding invitations to using Photoshop, teaching math and telling fortunes.
One is on social media platform Xiaohongshu, also known as RedNote. Titled Learning to Use DeepSeek in One Minute, it received more than 11,000 likes in just 10 days. Among the tutorials (教程), one released by Tsinghua University’s Metaverse (元宇宙) Culture Laboratory team — DeepSeek from Beginner to Mastery 2025 — stands out. The 104-page document, which covers theory and practical skills, is a detailed instruction for mastering DeepSeek and applying its full potential. It’s designed both for beginners and advanced users.
The guide provides strategies for creating requirements that enhance AI performance. It also includes case studies illustrating how to apply DeepSeek to meet various needs. Team leader Shen Yang, a professor at Tsinghua University’s School of Journalism and Communication and its College of AI, said human-computer dialogue is essential for progress.
“Even though AI’s capacity to understand human intentions has improved significantly, humans still need to clearly express their needs,” he said. “The combination of open-source software and inclusive applications is meaningful.” By providing free tutorials, for example, the team can deliver the power of AI to everyone, allowing each person to use and master it, rather than being dominated by it.
A social media influencer using the name Zhinan Shanhe posted a four-episode video tutorial of DeepSeek on Douyin and Xiaohongshu. The videos have been popular, gaining hundreds of thousands of likes. The 30-year-old man from Shanghai works in the AI industry and he has mastered many AI tools. “Before DeepSeek, I mostly used foreign AI models, which are not so user-friendly for Chinese people,” he said. “But the capabilities of DeepSeek are charming. It is powerful and also completely free, which is a blessing for its users.”
