I have happy memories of trips to Europe, but my trip to Romania was unique. When I was there, it was like being in a “James Bond” movie. My husband was born there, but his family sent him to study in Italy. Before he left, his mother told him, “As long as I write in pencil, you don’t come back. When I write to you in pen, it’s safe to return.” She never wrote in pen.

So, like the boy in Vittorio De Sica’s film The Bicycle Thief, he lived a poor life in Italy. He applied to go to America, but was rejected. He was accepted by Canada, though, and he then took a train to San Francisco and stayed there illegally. He became a US citizen until we married.

Seven years later, he felt it was safe to visit Romania. He hadn’t seen his mother, two sisters, and two brothers since he was 16. When we reached Bucharest, his family were waiting outside his sister’s house to greet us. After lengthy hugging, kissing, and crying, his family also hugged me, the American wife with two kids.

Romania didn’t have many dry cleaners. Most homes had old-fashioned washing machines but no dryers, and it was a hot summer. My husband’s relatives didn’t want to risk dirtying their clothes. Their solution was simply startling: the women dined in only their underclothes. The men were shirtless. I, of course, having just met them, ate fully clothed. I washed my clothes by hand and hung them outdoors to dry.

On the last night of our three-week stay, we had a large family dinner. I was tired of washing my clothes. So I palled my dress over my head and placed it on the chair behind me. The table broke out in applause. Even with my poor Romanian, I understood that they were saying, “She’s part of our family now.”

【小题1】When would the mother write to her son in pen?
A.When the family was rich.B.When the trip to Europe was safe.

A.By applying for a stay.B.By marrying an American woman.

A.Because she offered gifts to the whole family.B.Because she spoke her husband’s language.
C.Because she washed all the clothes by hand.D.Because she had dinner with underclothes only.
【小题4】What message does the author want to convey through the story?
A.“East and west, home is best.”B.“When in Rome, do as the Romans do.”
C.“Marry a dog and follow a dog forever.”D.“The cause of true love never runs smooth.”

Diving in the ocean, marine biologist Erika Woolsey has seen how coral reefs (珊瑚礁) are being damaged by climate change. It has made her decide to find a way to share her experience —including those who can’t easily explore the ocean.

Through her non-profit, The Hydrous, Woolsey is using virtual reality to bring the ocean to everyone. Scientists, filmmakers and divers are taking people on immersive (沉浸式的) virtual dives, attracting attention to reef damage and expecting action to protect our sea. About 25% of marine species depend on coral reefs. However, climate change, pollution and overfishing have done harm to around half the world’s shallow water coral reefs.

Twenty years of underwater exploration has given Woolsey a detailed understanding of the dangerous situations facing reefs. “I’ve seen this first-hand shift. Healthy colourful coral reefs become what look like the moonscape step by step,” Woolsey says.

It is through this experience that The Hydrous team set out to recreate with their award-winning film Immerse. Intended to watch with a VR headset, viewers join Woolsey for a nine-minute guided virtual div e on the coral reefs, immersed in a 360-degree underwater view.

They swim alongside sea turtles and sharks before witnessing the worsening of the reefs. The experience often brings out strong feelings. “As soon as people take off that headset and look me in the eye, they want to tell me a story about their ocean experience,” Woolsey says. “It’s that human connection to our ocean that will solve our ocean problems.”

Woolsey hopes advances in camera technology will allow her team to take more and more people to places in the ocean that are underexplored and places further away from human civilization. They are developing a virtual experience that will put the people in the role of a marine biologist, carrying out biodiversity surveys underwater, and even transporting the viewers to space to monitor global sea surface temperatures.

Firstly, I know this is a first world problem and I need to “dry my eyes”. I have a very small dishwasher in a very small kitchen. The other week when a friend showed me her new house with a big kitchen and a large dishwasher, I felt my throat got tight. I didn’t quite know what to say. And why did I even compare my life with other people’s life?
Maybe you’ll agree you have a similar experience. Why is this? I think a huge factor is how addicted we’ve all become to social media. We stare at people’s beautiful vacation photos at some great party wondering, “Why isn’t my life like that?” We forget that what we see are the carefully edited highlights of a person’s life aiming to give an impression of what they want to see — not necessarily how their life actually is.
Social media seem to give us anxiety that we aren’t doing as well as others or living up to expectations that we put on ourselves. On a good day, we can use this life envy to inspire ourselves — if they can do it, so can we! But on a bad day, we just feel angry, sad, disappointed, and worst of all, bitter. No one wants to admit to feeling envious. It is such a prohibited subject — desiring what others have.
So how do we overcome our little green-eyed monster? Stepping away from social media is a start. The less we pay attention to what other people are doing, the fewer opportunities we have to compare ourselves to them. Next step is to give ourselves some tolerance (宽容) and know that it’s a completely natural feeling. It doesn’t make us bad persons; it’s just a part of being human.
And most importantly, we need to start focusing on ourselves instead of others. The root of the problem is more a problem with how we’re feeling about ourselves than those we envy. My mom used to always tell me to “row your own boat”: and I think about that little phrase all the time. It may not be the biggest for it — and who knows where the journey will take us? Sure it beats feeling envious.

D.Hearing Betty has got a nice new job, you shift your focus on what you have.
